Jett Johnson Claims Maiden National Motorsport Tile with NAPA Auto Parts!
Third generation racer Jett Johnson has secured his first national motor crown, wrapping up the TA2 Muscle Car Series at Winton Motor Raceway on Sunday, 20th November 2022.
The son of Supercars race winner Steven Johnson and grandson of legendary motorsport icon Dick Johnson, Jett Johnson drove a calculated weekend to ensure the title, beating Graham Chaney convincingly to the crown.
Despite a difficult start to the weekend with a blow engine in Friday practice, Johnson capped off the TA2 season with second, fourth, fifth and fourth over the four races at Winton.
Johnson was the form man of the TA2 Muscle Car Series in 2022. He won nine races over the course of the six round season, including three pole positions.
The NAPA Auto Parts Mustang driver dovetailed his efforts in his striking blue, yellow and white Ford by entering the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series, scoring three podium positions and finishing 12th in that series.
Steve Johnson said the weekend started off to a rocky start, with Jett experiencing engine issues, but delivered great results in the end.
“He drove really well in the last race, but we had our struggles on Friday when we blew an engine and we were here until 2am on Saturday morning fixing it,” said Steven Johnson.
“Some say that we were unlucky with that, but I consider it luck to have happened on Friday, rather than in qualifying or the races.” he said.
Jett revealed he drove conservatively in the first two races when it was wet to make sure he got the championship.
“Once I knew I had the lead and I couldn’t be overtaken, I gave it a good push in the last race and ran with the leaders.
“I hope I did my grand dad proud in that last race. He wanted me to push and I feel I did. But I reckon he’d definitely be proud of the burn outs that I did at the end of that last race!” he said.
For 2023, Johnson has committed to another full season in the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series and is aiming at a program in Super2 or Super3 – the stepping stone to the Repco Supercars Championship.
Congratulations on your championship, Jett!
